Ankoma Outreach

26 February 2023 – “The teddy bear – a traditional and timeless toy providing comfort and companionship, and a friend to talk to. Whilst we predominantly find new feet for children’s preloved shoes, sometimes we get the offer of gifts stuffed full of love, outgrown by their first owners, but ready to find new hands to be held by.
Thanks to a few private donations, these soft toys are now in the arms of their new owners in a rural area in Ghana, West Africa, thanks to Ankoma Outreach. (There may have been whispered apologies to the teddies from the grown ups at HQ whilst packing them securely for their long journey. We ensured they were as comfortable as possible before setting off).”

22 December 2022 – “Your Sal’s sports Shoes are back on the court in Accra, Ghana thanks to the netball project run by Akwaaba Volunteers.
The role of netball as a tool for female empowerment in Ghana is an important one:
16% of girls in Ghana are never enrolled in school
17%of girls aged 15-24 are illiterate
34% of girls are involved in child labour
20% of girls are married before the age of 18
53% of adolescent females are victims of wife beating or abuse
There are over 60,000 children living on the streets of Accra. Girls under the age of 10 represent 59% of this total number. Akwaaba Volunteers are using the power of sport to empower young girls across Ghana’s capital. Sport as a force that can amplify women’s voices and tear down gender barriers and discrimination. Women in sport defy the misconception that they are weak or incapable. Every time a girl intercepts a ball or scores a goal they are demonstrating physical strength, leadership and strategic thinking and are taking a step towards gender equality.”

Kit 4 Kenya - Akwaaba Volunteers & England Football Team

16 December 2022 – “Whilst we’re now in the very fortunate position of being offered lots of lovely things free to a good hone, we’re aware of our limitations and tend to stick to shoes. One of the exceptions we have made is sports kit. We get so many Sal’s sports Shoes back on the playing field, it makes sense, when we’re offered teams worth of kit, to kit out players head to toe.
Thanks to Kit 4 Kenya and the England football team these young players at the Street 2 School Soccer Programme (S2S) run by Akwaaba Volunteers in Accra, Ghana have just been kitted out.
S2S aims to use the power of sport to encourage young people to invest in themselves, their education and the sport they love. Every week S2S focuses on education, sports, health and wellbeing, and character development. Tuesday – Friday they run training sessions for 6 different age groups from U6 – U17, Monday evening the children attend a class run by volunteer teachers so their educational progress can be kept track of, and at the weekend they organise matches in the community. As well as kit, S2S also provides Sal’s Shoes football boots to train in, health insurance, family support for those who need it, and educational scholarships so that they can ensure every child is going to school. Your Sal’s Shoes football boots are about to find their new owners amongst these smartly dressed players.”
